It is possible to exercise one's right to free speech and dissent--and even loathing, disgust and outrage--for the government and STILL be a patriot. That is all.

Shoot! This comment space is not big enough for my answer. Nor is it really the appropriate forum. Therefor, I will say that patriotism is overrated. From there I will direct anyone who wants an expanded look at that view come see me over at Brain Lumber.

Patriotism isn't overrated, it is misunderstood. The neocons have taken it and made it into something it is not--zombieism.
Point well taken. 'Tis not overrated so much as it has been hijacked.
