It has been so hot in Portland the last few days I wouldn't be at all surprised if one day I just woke up and combusted in a spontaneous sort of way. The sun is beating the shit out of everything--my slug-eaten basil, the grass in our white trash yard, and even VBM's Mom.
Loki has not been eating.
At first, we enticed her with the dogfood equivilant of cool-ranch doritos and that chem queso dip that comes in a can. She liked that for a day or two. Then nothing. We gave her some of her favorite treats, "liver biscotti" and then she went for a dry version of the canned cool ranch doritos. Each time she would agree to take a few bites, we would rejoice. But each day she changes her mind about what she wants. She won't even consider eating what we have been feeding her for years--oatmeal, raw meat and veg mix. Loki needs to keep her weight on. She is already a lean senior dog who gets a fair amount of exercise, and the more weight she loses, the worse her chances are of surviving for very long. She is still yellow.
We give her bile salts and vitamins, and big hits of liver support (Thorne's TAPS for anyone who wants to know--2 capsules TID.) Her thirst is decreased, which I am taking as a good sign. She was drinking crazy amounts of water before we started her on this regimen. I have been taking her for our regular morning walk for the last two days before it gets too hot out, and she has been her same old trotting self.
All weekend I kept getting this feeling that maybe she wanted some broccoli. This morning, I called up my spooky friend Jackie, who is able to talk to animal friends. Believe what you will, but when I was on the phone with Jack this morning, she told me Loki wanted chicken and rice and gravy. So I did what anyone else in my situation would do (okay maybe they wouldn't but I sure would) and went to the store and got her ground chicken dark meat, some broccoli, some brown rice, and some gravy. I cooked up the broccoli and chicken and garnished it with the gravy. That yellow bellied dog of mine ate it. And then she ate some broccoli out of my hand and sat down and smiled. It was like when Mulder kissed Scully that one time on New Year's Eve.
